The A league may look good on paper but the standard of what i've seen so far is worse than the junior league and that includes a couple of the eircom league proper reserve teams,i'm all for people trying to improve themselves and clubs doing likewise but i predict this league will have fallen by the wayside within 2-3 years.Best of luck to mervue and salthill for giving it a go,i wish ye well but i think it will all end in tears.

I agree that a supply of young players ready to step into Galway Utd in future would be very beneficial to Galway but would we not have been better off sorting out the Prem and having these young lads playing there??
On a personal note the jurys out on this new Eircom set up as far as i am concerned, but it does not look good!!!

paddy boy , at least someone can see it for what it is!!! Have not seen any matches but to me reading reports and hearing about attendances ect . a complete dead duck !!!!
As for great for young lads , load of b......s, they would be better off playing in he Prem and trying to improve our local leagues. Imagine young Salthill lad telling his mates he played in Eircom A league , but when asked how they done , he tells them they got beat 6-0......... Wink

Lads the A league is a step up from Junior football.Thats why we have divisions ,4th is of a lower standard than third division football ,Second division is lower than 1st division etc.get the idea.If the Galway teams are struggling at A level its a reflection on the poor state of Galway Football and that includes managers, coaches ,clubs , administrators etc.Very easy to be critical but what can you do to improve the situtation?

Good points Bono, Both sets of players will benifit from playing in the A league..And BB can you imagine young salthill player saying to his friends I played Eircom A league and won 3-1...(sligo) Very Happy

GG, that was not meant as a slur on Salthill, just an example because i firmly believe the Prem and rest of junior leagues are poor , Galway Utd are poor and i think that they should put their energy and resources into getting these sorted before they started or entered a new league,a league in which i think they are out of their depth. All this Eircom league has done is started a premiership like bidding war , in which according to rumours , all sorts of offers are being put on the table, legal or otherwise !!!The only leagues worth watching in my view are the juvenile leagues.
Bono, according to reports its not a big jump above a poor prem. league, you wouldnt need a step ladder by any means and as i said above get your own house in order first with a good quality junior set up and then by all means if capable of competing on a level playing field in Eircom League , take the jump!!! We will see at end of season how our big two have done in their travels all over the country!!!

I'd love to know what junior games you were going to last year.

I've been in junior dressing rooms on a Sunday morning and it smells like a pub .You have fellowes bragging about where and what they done last night and what they drank. In the other corner guys have their head in their hands and are unable to stand upright. Then someone else comes in looking for gear as they have'nt been at home yet.The manager is on the phone looking for players and the Chairman is down knocking on an U16s door because we have'nt a team. This my friend is the reality of junior football in this county and it goes on in every club in the city and county. If you have players who want to play at a higher level then the A league is a step in the right direction.Neither Mervue or Salthill said anything about winning it.They are having a look because both clubs realise that junior football is mediocre at best.I've seen the effort that both clubs put in by teaching players how to look after themselves and prepare properly for football at a higher level. The likes of West are and always will be resentful of progressive clubs .They are a glorified pub team catering for has beens and football nomads.

We seem to agree on one thing bono , give me an underage team anyday , but your right in your assessment of Junior football and some of the higher divs have the cheek to slag off div 4 , as a pub league!!!
My above posts are my own personal opinions re wrong timing and getting our own house in order first , teams being out of their depth ect. I am not trying to convert anyone to my religious beliefs , its just my reading of the situation and again my opinions........... Wink

Galway United 1 Limerick 37 0
Salthill 0 Drogheda United 1
Bohemians vs Mervue - OFF

There is normally no admission fee at Galway United or Mervue United A matches, although, in my opinion, both sides should charge E5 to help defray referees fees, travel, etc.

Am not arguing Ronan, but whats the point with the poor turn out at each match as little as a fiver could reduce it further , thus shooting themselves in the foot !!! Surely these clubs did their sums before taking the plunge .

i'm delighted to see mervue win, while not mervue's biggest fan,i admire the way the club is being run and the way they strive to improve themselves every year,no matter what grievances i have with any local club our rivalries i have with any local club,i will always support them when they take on teams from out of town,so well done to all involved today.

Great result for Mervue against a good Rovers side. But obviously they would have been better off playing against Oranmore or Corrib Rangers in the Premier League, according to some people. A win out in the Swamp is better for developing players so they say. Rolling Eyes

Well said , this attitude comes about by people actually believing that there own standards are the best you can get , and duly settle for that !High light of there career would be a junior medal of one sort or another .
They also love slagging off junior gaa players !!!!!! are they not one and the same ?

Tribesman , one battle does not win a war!!!! My point in the first instance was not against this league but sorting out the County leagues first ie Prem ect. then by all means enter the Eircom League!!! Clean up our own house first.........
Granted a great result for Mervue , but i did not see any comments from you like above, when Salthill got hammered, you cant pick out the odd good result and say it speaks volumes for the Eircom League!!!!

Tribesman, you earned your bread and butter reporting on junior games the last couple of seasons, the expenses must be alot better in this new A league for you with all the travelling,no wonder your praising it to the last, the fact remains the current MERVUE A team would not win the GALWAY PREMIER,while i wish them luck in this A league and i was delighted to see them win yesterday,1 swallow doesn't make a summer and when this all ireland league comes about in the next year or 2,the A league will be a distant memory and you'll be back down the swamp reporting with your tail between your legs.

Sure flee , Mervue must have been sick and tired of the winning the junior league , did they not win it 4 or 5 years in a row prior to Athenry winning their first ?
The fact they are now playing senior football , with every game a challenge and both clubs now being the small fish in the big pond speaks volumns for both clubs ambition and drive . They left junior soccer to their 3rd teams , nuff said !

This team is far removed from the Mervue junior team. Have a look at the line ups. Eric Browne and Dave Goldbey the only two from last years side, so the remainder will still be involved this year.

Good one. I'll be down the Swamp covering games anyway, definitely without a tail between my legs. Wouldn't miss it for the world. No travelling involved in this, just covering the home games.

Again ye're missing the bigger picture. The Galway league has failed to produce players capable of playing League of Ireland football in the last couple of years. It wasn't that long ago that Ollie Neary, Jumbo Brennan, Donie Farragher, Ricky Flaherty et al brought Galway Utd on a great run when the team played at Crowley Park. The Connacht Senior League helped them progress to that level. This A League will hopefully do the same. It may well fail but at least give it a chance.

Yes Buddy, Salthill were hammered. But learned from it and were unlucky to lose 1-0 to two good sides in the last few weeks. And it was Rovers who mauled them which makes Mervue's achievement all the more noteworthy.
