west beat mervue B 2nite to qualify for the last 8,wasn't at the game,i believe west rested alot of players and were nearly caught on the hop by a mervue side who deserved something out of the game.west are now at home to either blues our mervue A in the last 8.

Galway United held trials recently and reportedly only 6 turned up. Timing and lack of promotion being put forward as reasons.

Alan , I was told last season that they wouldn't have a team . Like everything eg Volvo race - "if you build it they will come " .They left it to the last minute , as you say timing .The have no interest in it nor unfortunatly the money .
Long term the folly of not becoming a "full " club with underage sections like Shels , Rovers , Cork etc will come back to haunt them . If Mervue continue to progress ,none of their underage will want to go to Galway United ( how many ex Mervue are up there now ) .Next phase will see Salthill Devon going in a similar direction as Mervue , which will result in the two top teams in Galway at underage not supplying GUFC with their undoubted academys of talent .

Players will always gravitate to Galway United, for one simple reason - money. Whether we like it or not, this is the nature of the League of Ireland.

Under Don O'Riordan era, United had a very strong underage section. This was abandoned due to costcutting, and also complaints that it was unfair on other local clubs (eg Galway United 10, West Coast United 0 - hypothetical example).

Why did you pick West Coast as your hypothetical example? Why not your own club, or like many others do you not have an underage set-up. Dont forget the kids also read this forum.
