west beat mervue B 2nite to qualify for the last 8,wasn't at the game,i believe west rested alot of players and were nearly caught on the hop by a mervue side who deserved something out of the game.west are now at home to either blues our mervue A in the last 8.

In fairness there were 2 teams at it. Athenry had 2 sent off plus their linesman.

They did not try to get game abandoned. Thomas Caldwell was injured in the tackle that got Emmet Byrne sent off and they had no more subs to bring on.
Disgraceful from both sides....not just West.

five players sent off in one game and still probably sticking to hard and fair but definetley not dirty tag Rolling Eyes i'm sure somehow all five sending offs were down to the galway fa not liking ye and not the indiscipine that plagues your club Shocked funny thing is west now have nothing to play for so suspensions wont matter Athenry lads will miss Connaught final as they have no reserve team to get suspensions out of the way

how am i not suprised that west had 4 sent off as the game was a title decider.. by all accounts it was unbelieveable what was going on. Alan o Donovan nearly had his hip taken clean off by a 2 footed attack!!. No place for that in galway football and West should be punished for it. Completely disgraceful. Athenry were never a dirty side and every club in town will admit that..

The current West Utd brigade bring shame to one of the oldest areas of the city. The Murphys O Tooles Walshes Shaughnessy's O Connors Deacy's Noel Crowley Noel Mernagh James O Toole Eamonn Howley Michael Geary etc etc etc never ever had to resort to violence. All the mentioned are proud West men and it is an awful pity to see a once proud club being dragged through the gutter..These lowlifes who are constantly before the GFA should get very lenghty suspensions and hefty fines. Well done to Athenry who dererve to be CHAMPIONS!

i said i better set the record straight on this game, there was always likely to be trouble after the connacht cup game, where an athenry supporter hit gary fitzgerald in the face, which was seen and acknowledged by patsy forde who was doing the line and nothing happened, after the game in the conn cup,the athenry centre half came over to a west player who was holding his niece in his arms and chatting to his mother and father and abused him and his niece, yes his niece an infant, west have lost 3 league games this year, all of which patsy forde has been the ref,he robbed west midweek against mervue as well in the michael byrne cup,up until yesterday west had 2 players sent off all year and both by patsy forde,he lost complete control of the game yesterday and was largely at fault for most that went on,west struggled to field a team yesterday, largely due to the fa making them play 10 games in 4 weeks,no ian burke, john egan, mark cobey, mats o malley, mike o malley, dara o neill, vinny o connor or miko nolan all injured against athenry and still were the better team even down to 9 men it took an offside goal and a dubious penalty to defeat them, the only player injured in the game yesterday was a west player who was a victim of a vicious tackle, the 1st 2 sent off 1 each from both sides should never of went, seamie rabbitte deserved to go,he throw a punch after been on the recieving end of one from paddy quinn, yet only 1 gets sent, darren roach sent off for mouthing which was no worse than the abuse alan o donovan dished out to the official, yet no action taken on him, stumpy deserved to go for putting in a couple of bad challenges, the other west player sent was rodney grant.there was alot of bad blood yesterday but it all came from the 2 incidents the week before in the conn cup,i also agree athenry are not a dirty team but these flash points can happen when you have 2 highly competitive teams been officiated by a neglegent official, even our esteemed man in black pb would not of lost the run of himself like this.

west had 4 sent off not 5,i feel sorry for one of the athenry lads, cos he didn't deserve to go,the other lad deserved to go,so he deserves his punishment the same as the west lads.

Patsy Forde was the referee for the Irish Cup Semi final in Mervue after the Athhenry V West game. This game was attended by a very large crowd including mysef, the Cork side won 1-0 NOBODY WAS SENT OFF AND NO ONE BLAMED THE REF. Patsy is one of the better refs around. You should see what referees the underage games.Get rid of the thugs West !

Few weeks ago T.C played Mervue at home and lost, nothing unusual there, untill i was talking to J.J few days later and he told me one of the Tuam lads was in trouble for laying his hands or pushing the ref. and was probably facing a yr. or so on the sidelines!!! He then went on to say and i quote "i told them that ref(Michael M.) wasnt strong enough for that game BUT THEY WOULDNT LISTEN".
I was under the impression that j.j himself allocated the games to refs himself , but following that statement, its obviously not!!! So who decides the refs for games and surely there are certain refs who would be given games with an expected flashpoint , or high priority games such as with teams with a bit of "history" between them...........Which does not excuse the players behavior by the way!!! Not picking on West but surely its time for the Fa to hand out severe punishment to players from any team, who cross the line.
Contrary to what bono says above its not down to West as a club to as he says " get rid of the thugs" thats what the F.A are for , is it not???
Hibs Legend , we played East Utd at u13s and the subs and young supporters were telling one lad they would give him a fiver if he got sent off, so he spent the game kicking anything that moved. When brought to refs attention he gave him a yellow. I wouldnt normally mention club involved but if thats their attitude at u13 , i wouldnt like to meet him at Junior!!!!

i'm not stating how good west are at all,i mentioned 3 out of the 4 deserved to be sent off.what i said the west A sides discipline has been brilliant all year, but yes west do have a problem with patsy forde reffin there games,if a west official had hit an athenry player the game would be abandoned straight away,do you think it is correct for a player to abuse another player after a game while he's holding an infant and talking to his parents, there was always going to be pay back after that, the athenry player crossed the line that day, don't forget also yesterday that the athenry assistant manager came on the pitch yesterday and tried to strike a west player.what kind of ban will he recieve?one more thing the galway fa have fixed athenry to play salthill 2moro nite so that there suspensions will be served,so they are not been punished and yet everyone is callin for west 2 be punished severely, athenry were just as bad as west yesterday but will they both recieve the same punishments?also had west beaten athenry, would the galway fa of fixed a game so the west lads could play in the final?ya right, would they FU*CK a case of double standards as usual,to answer ur question on the points deduction,i'm not sure, all i know is they were promoted but i'll try and find out!

I wasn't at the West / Athenry bout , but the stories going around about it and posts are gas ! Being serious for once , Patsy Fordes name is being dragged through the mud here big time , is his standard of refereeing any worse than the standard of junior soccer at the moment ? No , not by a long shot ! If the likes of Patsy & co are driven from the game by abuse like this who will replace them ? No refs , no matter what the standard , = no games .
As the standard of the leagues has plummeted over the last number of years , the standard of reffing has also dropped but not as alarmingly as the playing side of things , bar the stamina /age difference , the standard barely reaches the level of the pub soccer leagues in the early 90s - fact .
Teams like West , athenry etc who have relativly long runs in cups + league are punished by their success with all the games at this time of year , why not start the likes of the premier league 2/3 weeks before the rest get under way and give them a chance ? Aligned with the frustration of loads of games in a short space of time a few West players have over reacted and brought shame to themselves and their club . I would not go as far as call any of the players on both sides thugs , they have more than other clubs in the " tougher / no fear " dept , they take it and give it back harder , which inevitably leads to explosions now and then .
Anyway , my prediction for next season , West to win the league in early August 2009 in a play off in Mountjoy prison yard ( if all the posts here are to be followed up on) over Athenry ! Nothing will be done to improve the game in Galway , and dramatic numbers will be seen moving to GAA and Tag rugby !

WELL LADS THINK WE ALL AGREE ON THE STATE OF SOCCER GENERALLY IN GALWAY.IN MY TIME NOT AS MANY LEAGUES SO MORE REFS FREE,SO WHEN WE PLAYED WEST,MERVUE LINESMEN WERE AVAILABLE.THIS CUD B APPLIED TO CERTAIN PREM.MATCHES MAYB.AS BORAT SAYS START THEM EARLIER.STOP IN NOV,PLAY DIV 4 THAT TIME AND RESUME IN END OF JAN.IN THE WEST V ATHENRY MATCH IF LINESMEN WERE AVAILABLE AND A STRICT DIRECTIVE GIVEN TO SAME AND PATSY ALOT OF THIS WUDENT HAVE OCCURED.HOPE LESSONS ARE LEARNED BY THE FA.BUT I DOUBT IT.PATSY IS A FAIR REF INTHE MATCHES IVE SEEN BUT IN GENERAL THE STANDARD IS VERY POOR,HENCE A POOORER LEAGUE,MORE ILL DISCIPLNE THAT IN THE 80,S WHEN A GOOD STANDARD PREVAILED.VINNY BYRNE WUD HAVE SORTED THIS LOT OUT NO PROB.

You cant condone any foul play , but it happens , not just with West !!! Earlier this yr. T.C V NUIG , 22 man brawl but nothing was written re that match???
A lot of posts are from people who were not even at the match, just jumping on the crucify West bandwagon!!!
There are incidents in a lot of matches that dont include West , SO LEAVE IT TO THE REFS REPORT AND THE GALWAY FA TO SORT OUT, THATS WHAT THEIR THERE FOR!!!!( look at meath v dublin in gaa)

I dont disagree with you often and morally thats what clubs should do but i dont know one club who would suspend a player themselves for typical offences of getting sent off , its left to the FA!! Their not going to lose players themselves.
