Michael Byrne Cup

west beat mervue B 2nite to qualify for the last 8,wasn't at the game,i believe west rested alot of players and were nearly caught on the hop by a mervue side who deserved something out of the game.west are now at home to either blues our mervue A in the last 8.

also what players are impressing so far... for me my top 3 are
1.s walsh(hibs)
2.vinny o connor(west)
3.barry moran(rangers)

between rangers, hibs and athenry, west i don't think will do it this season, the bad start will come back 2 haunt them.

hibs and corrib rangers in the driving seat at the moment, athenry will improve as the season goes on with some big players to come back, west will need to win at least 11 out of their remaining 13 games to have a chance its a tall order.

League is wide open I think this year which should make it very interesting. Rangers are going well but have done this in the past before falling away. Think Athenry will probably sneak it in the end when they get their GAA players released!!! Mervue will take points of teams as they will be hard to beat as they have got a good squad of young players but may fall short in the end. would not totally rule out West just yet either with the way results are going at the moment. Oranmore have had a great start fair play to them but not good enough but will take points of teams no doubt!

Rangers are favourites now to go on and win the league but i think oranmore are in with a real shout. Athenry will be up there but I think west have dropped too many points. College will fall away as usual.

ha always the same when team is doin well the doubters come in , was at the rangers game and they could of won by more and they looked far from bottlers to me lady ga ga , they beat a good mervue side .. 2 big games coming up against hibs and college for them though and if they come through them they'll be in a strong position .there the team to catch at the moment cant see them been beat easily

just going to throw something up in the air..... Anyone and i mean anyone with no disrespect to Willie Grant and i`know Willie well... Can put a good team together for one season....
But lads the sign of a good club is to mantain this consistency throughout sason to season,i`ve seen it too often with clubs before and all it does is give clubs false hope, and one good year results in 3 years in the doldrums
Start at the bottom and work it up.........................

that good west team wasn't put together over one season, they got promoted to the premier added a couple finished 3rd in their first season added a couple more finished second the following season added a couple more and won the league by a distance, that was 4 years hard work, that west team wasn't thrown together over a season and the likes of gary fitz, ian burke, tom burke, vinny o connor, dara o neill, tom caldwell and miko nolan now gone all played for west in the 1st division, simon murray, mathias and mike o malley and john egan are in their 3rd season with west, gareth gorman hardly played with west, willie mcdonagh and tommy walsh were signed after the league was well and truly won so that west team was a work in progress and a very good side for the last few years!their in trouble at the moment but they'll pull through.everyone said athenry would dominate for years to come that changed with the emergence of west now its up to rangers to take up the mantle and see can they win a premier.

if west didn't go outside for players they wouldn't be still in existence.every team in galway city anyway have players from all over the the town!i'd love to see a team full of west and claddagh lads but it would mean having paddy grant, patsy o connor and a few more pensioners playing, the west and claddagh are 2 of the oldest areas in galway the youth is not there to field a team without going outside!

Agree with ya on some points here , for years until they resurrected their underage ( fair play to them ) Hibs depended on outside mainly ex Mervue players as had Bohs and numerous others, in order for them to field teams .In the premier at the moment outside of Mervue , Salthill and Colmanstown, no one else could say all their players came through their underage system . NUIG ,West & Bohs have none . Oranmore just u 18 , Rangers have more or less abandoned their underage , they used to have all the way up to 18s , Athenry have underage but their amount of outsiders has increased . So all in all a bit of a pointless argument rooted in the ga - play for the parish !

Great win for Rangers over Mervue and they certainly have a match winner in Barry Moran a great signing. They are definately contenders but can they sustain it for the season. Athenry are still in the running but I think West need to concentrate on getting themselves a win or two before they are facing a battle at the bottom. Oranmore haven't the squad but will get results. NUIG two great results last 2 weekends big game against Mervue (for both teams) this sunday will tell a lot.

Was at Corrib Rangers Mervue Game At the weekend and must admit was surprised to see a impressive match two good teams and indeed moran is a great signing their defence is as tough as nails, (solid cannot believe it is the same defence that allowed 8 goals past against west last year) Maybe goalkeeper should be tested for illegal substances??????????????? Then again the keeper last year was miles better than the current one from the games I have seen . He got man of the match every game , gone on to play league of Ireland where he would be playing still bar injury .
A friend of minein Rangers has told me they are about to sign the top keeper in Mayo a guy from a team near Castlebar , Ballyheane they are called .
Another thing to remember here , you say two good teams , fair enough ..... cant stand them but that is really Mervues third team !

I am sorry that i have offended you judge, found out today it was actually Ryan Griffen not john egan,,,,it just that i cant figure now if is ryan really that good or,more than likely egan is really that bad JUDGING by your previous comment.
